The Plan

Thorsmork and Eyjafjallajokull Adventure

This adventure combines waterfalls, historical landmarks, and Thorsmörk, one of Iceland’s most visually attractive destinations. Surrounded by rivers, forests and the Eyjafjallajökull, Tindfjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull Glaciers, Thorsmörk provides some of Iceland’s most beautiful and breathtaking scenery which will leave our guests in awe! Furthermore. Thorsmörk provides plenty of hiking opportunities, exploring caves, ravines and climbing hilltops with wonderful views of the surrounding areas.

On this adventure, our journey will take us eastwards from Reykjavik towards the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano, which, in good conditions, should be visible as we cross the Hellisheidi mountain road, a short 15-20 minutes into our trip from Reykjavik.

We recommend that you are well dressed for this tour i.e. waterproof hiking boots and water/windproof shells for tops and bottoms. An extra pair of socks is also a good idea as some of the hikes may require us to jump across small streams.

Nauthúsagil

Our journey into Thorsmork will have us stopping at two or three secret sites which will give you plenty of time to stretch and take pictures. One of the most unique stops is without doubt Nauhúsagil, a narrow ravine in the mountainside of foothills of Eyjafjallajökull Glacier. As we negotiate our way into the ravine, the walls get progressively taller as the crevice gets narrower.

The end of the ravine greets us with a fairy-tale like waterfall which can only be described as majestic; well worth the short hike, even though your hiking boots may get wet. Again, an extra pair of socks is highly recommended.

Gígjökull Glacier

Our superjeep takes you through creeks and rivers as we travel along the edge of the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano. We will also have a closer look at another glacier which extends out of Eyjafjallajokull, called Gigjokull.

When Eyjafjallajökull erupted in 2010, there was a considerable amount of melting which took place as heat from the erupting volcano underneath the ice cap made its way to the surface. This caused a massive flood which inevitably needed to find its way down to the plains along the path of least resistance. In this case, the path was down through Gígjökull Glacier. The flood caused even further melting as the glacier melt made its way to the Markárfljót River at the bottom of the valley, consequently reducing the size of an already receding Gígjökull by a significant amount.

Thorsmörk

While in Thorsmork we will have lunch, a bit of relaxation and for the more energetic crowds there are plenty of short hikes in the area.

Conditions allowing (after early December and in clear weather) we may choose to traverse up to the top of Eyjafjallajokull, Europe’s most notorious volcano. During its most recent eruption in 2010 when it spewed ash into the atmosphere consequently halting international air traffic for weeks on end. Today, all is hopefully forgiven as we negotiate our way to the top for astounding panoramic views of the area. If you do opt for the challenge of Eyjafjallajökull, about a 3-4 hour trip, you may find that we would need to sacrifice some of the other sites on the tour.

Seljalandsfoss

Our last stop is at Seljalandsfoss Falls, where visitors can view one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. Its scenic narrow drop of 60 meters into a glacial lagoon gives visitors a unique sight. More adventurous visitors (which we are) can venture behind the falls for an even more breath-taking view from behind the water drop.
